There comes a time in each of our lives when it feels like the next chapter in our story is unwritten. Each morning, we wake up and are faced with the expansiveness of our futures, seemingly unknown and hidden to us. Some of us are fearful, some of us nostalgic, some of us excited, and some of us have already arrived — but most of us live in the in-between. These feelings all hit us at different points along the journey, riding on a wave of quiet hope until we reach that grand unknown, finally relieved. The "Skyline EP" is the musical representation of the experience. The four songs (think of them as movements) together make a complete statement about this journey—so spare 15 minutes and listen to all of them together.
ABAHK releases the original master of Cover Your Tracks and its instrumental as singles for the first time. The song was featured in the film & soundtrack (The Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Pt. 2) and gave indie/folk rock artist Dave Wilton the courage to finally finish and release his debut album.
The varied sounds on ‘Adrian Thaws’ reflect a lifetime of influences and experiences, from an upbringing in Bristol’s multi-racial Knowle West district to the years Tricky has spent traveling and collaborating with a host of like-minded artists. “I can be anything I want when I do an album,” he says. “I could be a woman, I could be a man. It’s great to be able to be all these different things.”
The new "DJ-Kicks" mix from Berlin-based trio Brandt Brauer Frick explores a distinctly human side of machine-made music, deeply infusing emotion into each track, while embracing flaws and imprecisions.
This second full-length album by Omaha, Nebraska singer/songwriter and American Idol contestant Tim Halperin follows the piano-fueled approach that made his 2011 debut, Rise and Fall, a success. The record has drawn comparisons to the work of Ben Folds and John Mayer, while a percentage of profits from this release will go to a children's charity founded by the late Texan DJ Kidd Kraddick.
The Shanghai Restoration Project’s album “The Classics” features contemporary remakes of popular 1930s & 1940s Shanghai jazz songs. The album masterfully blends Chinese instruments with the western sounds of hip hop and electronica.
Breach is the house-focused pseudonym of the Bristol, England multi-instrumentalist Ben Westbeech. He first used this alter ego as a recording name a good six years after his own name graced the landmark opening release for Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label. February 2013 brought an inventive and moody collaboration with the London-based trio Dark Sky. However, it was the more commercial approach of "Jack" — released the same year on San Francisco's Dirtybird Records — which secured Breach a U.K. Top Ten single placing.
Winging its way to you just in time to chase away those bleak midwinter blues, this second compilation of Highline Records artists and friends features brilliant holiday tracks from indie rock legends Lilys, britpopper Dodgy, glitter-rockers Glam Chops (featuring Eddie Argos from Art Brut), Francis Macdonald of Teenage Fanclub, LA shoegazers Western Lows, and indiepop starlet Piney Gir.
Also featured are the UK Folk duo Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou, and therockabilly-noir stylings of Dennis Hopper Choppers, plus many more great songs to get you indie rocking around the Christmas tree.
"The Blues And Greys is an indie rock collective from Santa Barbara, California whose soaring tunes and expressive lyrics will surely garner a good deal of notice.
Fronted by the luminous vocal inflections of Lindsey Waldon, The Blues And Greys channel such classic acts as The Ocean Blue and The Cranberries, while maintaining their own unique visions with their phenomenally vibrant compositions.
Bright Lights EP is a stunning introduction, consisting of five gorgeous tracks that will make you want to take on the world on the large." -- Highwire Daze
Ranger is Nicole Vaughn, a multi-instrumental songwriter based in Los Angeles, California.
Writing her own songs for the better part of a decade, Nicole plays music that calls wallflowers out to the center of the dance floor, across the street to the bar for the after party, and on out of bed the next morning just in time for Sunday mass – in other words; her music moves people.
Following stellar packages for "Beam Me Up" and "My Way," Will Saul's Close project maintains its excellent standards for remix curation on the album's third single, "Wallflower" (featuring vocals from Fink). This time around, remix duties are handled by Kyle Hall, Deetron, Huxley, and Quantum Entanglement.
Five years after the release of “Cryland,” French singer-songwriter Don Cavalli returns with a sophomore effort that KCRW lauds as “familiar, yet completely fresh at the same time.” Using his uncanny ability to blur the lines of genre, Cavalli creates a landscape of sound surreal and incomparable.
Some long distance relationships work better than others, and, in the case of the newest release from Eric & Magill (a.k.a Brooklyn-based Eric Osterman, and Ryan Weber, who currently lives in rural Kenya) it soars. With such a wide range of experience, “Night Singers” blends sounds both traditional and eclectic to create a unique brand of indie pop.
They are back with a taste of the medicine that brought them fame and acclaim with Zoot Suit Riot. This record is a collection of songs penned about the Great Recession held together by swing's timeless beat.

VUM'S JENNIFER PEARL NAMED ONE OF LA WEEKLY'S 10 BEST LA SINGER-SONGWRITERS
LA Weekly named Jennifer Pearl of VUM one of the "10 Best Young L.A. Singer-Songwriters".
"Jennifer Pearl's ghostly vocals echo with a Lynchian quality, adding texture to her band Vum's gothic-psychedelia. Her words, filled with paranoid existentialism, describe lush landscapes and mental breakdowns. Pearl embraces a form of minimalism in her vocal delivery, combining styles found in darkwave and proto-punk. It's deep, like a twisting L.A. noire mystery, and on a track like "Hall of Mirrors," downright spooky."
Released on May 20 on iTunes and On Demand, the indie film “The Big Ask” features the song “Oh My Child” by The Blank Tapes.

VUM NAMED TO LA WEEKLY'S LIST OF TOP 10 RISING FEMALE-FRONTED BANDS IN LOS ANGELES
"When Henry Rollins told us to listen to Vum, we listened totheir latest LP Psychotropic Jukebox, and then went back and listened to their trippy debut Night Sun. On each song, Jennifer Pearl's ghostly vocals induce LCD-trips through echoing hills and lush terrain, a sound inspired by Krautrock and controlled psychedelia.
"On tracks like "Hall of Mirrors," gothic organs and echoing drums create a moody juxtaposition to L.A.'s sunny sensibility - hurling you down a giant rabbit hole of Lynchian imagery that includes mangled beauty queens and paranormal activity."

HUFF POST CALLS OUT SSP BANDS IN BEST OF LA ARTICLE
excerpt by Art Tavana
"Speaking of parking, Echo Park is still one of the only places in town where $2 can provide all-day parking near music venues like The Echo, where L.A.'s best local bands perform on a nightly basis, like the GROWLERS, who have spiraled out of Costa Mesa with a retro sound that's woozy, and loaded with enough reverb to send a drunken crowd into a dizzying tailspin of jamband fever. They might be from all over greater Los Angeles, but bands like the GROWLERS, ABIGAILS, and VUM are more Echo Park bands than anything else - embraced equally by the newly arrived hipsters and the vibrant Mexican-American community that gives Echo Park its soul."
VUM GETS NOD ON HENRY ROLLINS' DEC. LA TIMES PERSONAL PLAYLIST
The local Topanga Canyon duo Vum and their limited edition vinyl, “Night Sun”:
“It’s a guy and a girl, and they make this really low-key minimal music. I get so much stuff sent to me and a lot of it is, ya know, pretty bad. But this band immediately jumped out. One of the great things about the radio show is that you get to help some really good bands, when they’re basically running a record company out of their living room. So I’ve played them almost weekly on the radio.” - Read more

CHERRY POPPIN' DADDIES
NEW RECORD - 'WHITE TEETH, BLACK THOUGHTS' (JULY 16)
White Teeth, Black Thoughts is the new double album from the Eugene, OR based band. Despite scoring a 2x RIAA platinum certified smash with 1999's cutting "Zoot Suit Riot," the Daddies hadn’t made another swing record, choosing instead to try their hand at Motown soul, R&B, psychedelia, funk, country and other world music.
Now they have circled back to the genre that put them on the map in the late nineties. This is a jitterbug/jazz record of the finest order: a collection of songs penned as the Great Recession wreaked havoc upon the heartland, held together by swing's timeless beat.

LA BAND HOLY FOLK PREMIERES NEW SINGLE “TIME LAPSE” ON KCRW MUSIC BLOG, MAY 14
“I could’ve taken it easy, but shallow things please me. Get myself lost in the time lapse” ... Time Lapse lyrics
“Time Lapse” documents that moment when you awaken from the depths of a dreamlike relationship and find yourself alone and a bit broken.
The dream is over but the passage of time brings its own brand of salvation. The melody sways and drifts, rises and glides down like the turns of the affair itself, until we reach the end and are returned to the present where everything is new.”-- Ryan George
The album “Motioning” will be out June 18 on Silver Side.
The band will be playing at The Echo Friday, May 17, and on June 20 at El Cid.

JETS OVERHEAD'S "BEACH DREAM" GRACES
CLINT EASTWOOD'S "TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE"
"Beach Dream" (to listen, click here) -- off of Jets Overhead's new album Boredom and Joy -- can be heard in Clint Eastwood's new film, "Trouble With the Curve".
This Canadian rock act -- hailing from Victoria, British Columbia -- will be following up their album with a release of remixes of the first single, the title track, for your grooving pleasure.
Here is singer Antonia Freybe-Smith's take on the “Beach Dream” track.
"Our home, Vancouver Island, is very beach-y. Beaches are important: the shape, smell, landmarks of certain beaches are locked into our brains and hearts. There’s the beach you go to when you want to party, there’s the beach you go to when you’re falling in love or out of love, there’s the beach you go to when everything’s going wrong and you need to be by yourself and try and figure out why."
"Beach Dream was formed in a delicious “Oh ya!” moment when we combined two different song chunks we were working on as a band. One of the chunks sprung from a particular special evening. That night, we decided to swap instruments to see what would happen. Little known fact: Piers Henwood can hold his own behind the drumkit."
"I have a neat memory of one of our last nights in New York: Recording tambourine on Beach Dream as we sip sparkling wine while sweating and dancing around in a little overheated iso room at Flux Studios on the Lower East Side…The sky, a dark electric blue beaming through the window as the winter evening sets in."
The set touches on the influences of the group's leader, Andy Butler, "from proto house, through New York's golden years in the 90s, to Chicago jack tracks and modern takes on house music's halcyon days," according to a press release.
We are excited to work this music through !K7 Label Group.
A collection of classic Japanese songs reinterpreted by Western artists, this is the first project in this collection and focuses on the works of Kazuo Zaitsu, an iconic singer and composer who has captivated Japanese audiences since the 1970s.
The first EP is five tracks of rewritten/reenvisioned English versions of Kazuo Zaitsu’s music, while still keeping the spirit of the original Japanese songs. It is produced by The Shanghai Restoration Project’s Dave Liang and features the artists Emi Meyer, Shayna Steele, Abigail Washburn, Lily Henley, and Fraser Anderson.
2006 marked the release of Midlake's pivotal sophomoric "Trials of Van Occupanther" album, described by critics as being a standout record which graciously acknowledges influences like Fleetwood Mac, ELO, and Neil Young.
The Dallas-based folk-rock band conceptualizes the tribulations of a fictitious character through eleven emotionally engaging tracks.
"As is the case with many of the tunes here, Midlake excels at carefully adorning their songs with just enough extras — a synth here, a piano there, a string section peeking through — to make the songs extraordinary."
